Banding materials used in packaging can vary dramatically based on the application. Below are brief descriptions for banding materials used throughout the world.
Polypropylene strapping is used for bundling multiple products together and strengthening corrugated packaging when holding heavy objects. Polypropylene can be applied by hand or machine. Machine banding can differ in width, thickness, color, length and core size. Common Applications – Corrugated box reinforcement and strapping boxes together for shipping.
Polyester strapping is often used in place of steel strapping for heavier pallet loads. Polyester banding is applied to pallets of products to help secure and unitize heavy objects. Polyester banding is tightened with a tensioning tool. After tension is applied it is crimped together. Polyester banding will ensure products stay conformed and keep from shifting during transport. Polyester strapping is used multiple products together and holding pallet loads onto pallets during transportation.
Steel strapping is the strongest banding available and used for stabilizing heavier product loads. Manual tensioners pull the banding tight to keep it from shifting during transport. Steel banding is crimped together with buckles and a crimping tool. For some product loads steel banding is not replaceable and considered a must have. Double stacking pallets for transport and holding heavy drums of liquids requires a durable banding that will not break and spill contents. Common Applications – Securing heavy and odd-shaped products together and stacking pallets for transport.

Polyester strapping
- Polyester strapping is a safe way to secure all types of products.
- Polyester strapping is an alternative to steel strapping. The strapping does not rust or stain you product. Polyester strapping gives reduced indentation on palletised goods compared to steel strapping.

- Ribbon wound steel strapping has very high tensile strength.
- Ribbon steel strapping is used primarily for heavy duty applications where high levels of strength and little to no stretching is desired.
- Steel strapping is not forgiving and can damage products making it inappropriate for more delicate products.

- Snap-on metal seals can be used with 13mm, 16mm or 19mm wide steel strapping.
- Open seals allow users to easily slide the buckle over the plastic strapping after tension has been applied. Once the buckle is positioned properly, a sealing tool can be used to close and tighten the open seal around the plastic strapping. Commonly used with polypropylene strapping and polyester strapping. The open seals offer the ability to apply additional friction to the strapping once closed.
